Redefining your niche
Bill Myers
Printer-Friendly Format

A business associate called to complain that there were so many new competitors in his niche, it was becoming increasingly difficult to find new customers.

He had been publishing information in this same niche for 10 years, and wanted to know if I had any advice for him.

I asked him what kind of business (or job) he would look for if his business completely went away.

As he thought about his options, he realized that as far as he was concerned, he was already in the perfect business (information publishing). He just needed to find a better niche - one that wasn't so saturated with competitors.

And that's when he realized that by changing that one aspect about his current business (his niche), he could significantly improve his business outlook, without having to acquire new equipment, learn new skills, or get a real job.

For most information publishers, the answer to the question remains the same. Stick with information publishing, but choose a better niche market.
