Follow the leader
Bill Myers
I recently did of study of the top 100 most visited sites on the internet. My main goal was to find out what these sites had in common. Here's what I found. Of the top 100 sites, 95% used the same font face, same font color, same color page background, and font sizes varying by only a few pixels. Almost all the top sites used a similar site layout, with top left, right and bottom navigation menus, with content placed in a center area. And surprisingly, a majority of the top 100 sites used the same color combinations and placement of graphics. There are probably many good reasons all these top sites have chosen a similar look and feel - and no doubt the highly paid consumer behavior experts these sites rely on can list them all. But for you and I, the only thing we really need to know is this - if all the top sites use a common layout, font face, font color, font size, and menu placements, we'd probably do well to play 'follow the leader' and let their research and success be our guide in choosing colors, fonts, and layouts for our own web sites. In this case, playing 'follow the leaders' means your web site can have the look and feel of success - without you having to guess what that look might be.
