Honey or vinegar: which are you?
Bill Myers
You've probably seen the type. Agressive, headstrong, competitive, a little distrustful, and always with a 'never give an inch' attitude. Sometimes these traits are good - at least for gun toting heros in action/adventure movies. But in the real world, these traits rarely get you anything more than high blood pressure and a reputation as a hothead people try to avoid. If you really want to get the best service when dealing with others -- especially when you are trying to get a problem resolved, or a free airline upgrade or a better table at a restaurant, -- try the 'magic words'. Those magic words are "Please", "Thank You", and "Would it be possible?". You'll find that being polite and respectful to customer service staff almost always is the best way to get better service. For the worst service possible, try being loud, abusive and generally obnoxious - those traits will often quickly turn the customer service staff against you. Not only is it easier to be nice, it is more rewarding - for both for you and the person you are dealing with. As your mother probably told you, you can attract more flies with honey than vinegar. Try it with people (rather than flies), and you'll be pleasantly surprised with the results.
