To Catch a Thief
Bill Myers
Printer-Friendly Format

It will happen to you. One day you'll wake up and discover that someone has illegally copied your web site and gone into business selling unauthorized copies of your products.

This is precisely what happened to me this week. I discovered that someone had copied my MemberGate web site and was offering unauthorized (and non-working) copies of MemberGate to unknowing customers. The person responsible for the site had decided that if he removed my copyright from the 200+ programs that make up the MemberGate system, he could get away with it.

He was wrong. It took less than 48 hours to put him out of business (I detail how I did this in the article, "To catch a thief" on my web site).

If you create products that are easily copied, especially books, articles, or software, the chances are good that eventually someone will decide to copy your products and sell them as their own.

This is part of the reality of doing business on the internet - and it is up to you to build and deliver your products in a way that copyright theft can be easily detected, proven, and shut down. Failure to do so makes you ripe for the picking by copyright thieves.
