Throw off the bowlines

"Yeah, I had the same idea. If I had followed through, I'd be a millionaire today."

How many times have you heard someone say, "I thought about doing that, I just never got around to it." Or, "If I had gone down that road ten years ago, my life sure would be different now." Or, "Yeah, I had the same idea. If I had followed through, I'd be a millionaire today."

The truth is, we can all think of missed opportunities that would have changed our lives.

But unless you have a time machine, you can't change the past and recapture those lost opportunites.

However, you can change your future - often by just making small changes in the things you do now.

For example, when I was trying to escape the corporate world, I knew I wanted out, but didn't have time to find an escape route. I decided to start small, giving up one hour of TV each evening to work on a product I could sell. It took me more than six months to get that first project completed. And another six months before the project made any money.

But through that small shift in direction, I was eventually able to escape the corporate world and pursue an entirely different adventure. It wasn't always easy, but I never regretted doing it.

Mark Twain summed it up best when he said, "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

For most of us, that is good advice. Don't wait until it is too late to live your life.
