Earn $1,000 a week

Printer-Friendly Format

The Help Wanted ad read, 'Earn $1,000 a week as our representative. Travel and meet new friends. Great summer job. Call today.'

I was trying to pay my way through college and needed a job, so I called. At the job interview I was told if I followed simple guidelines, I would be earning at least $500 a week - maybe as much as $5,000 a week, meeting lots of new people, and getting lots of fresh air and exercise.

Sounded good to me, so I agreed to be 'hired'.

Only later did I discover that the job was actually selling encyclopedias door-to-door. It could have been a miserable job, walking through big city neighborhoods knocking on doors trying to sell books.

But I kind of enjoyed it. Because I found out that by following the carefully prepared sales script, and by knocking on at least 90 doors a day, I really was able to earn $1,000 a week or more.

Sure it was hard work. And there was a lot of rejection. But in the end I learned that to reach goals, you have to start knocking on doors and learn to deal with rejection.

The same is true for product developers. Knock on enough doors, do enough projects, and eventually you will succeed.
