A Flash in the Pan?
Bill Myers - November 11, 2011
The world of web video changed this week. Especially for those of us who put videos on our web sites. See, this past week, Adobe announced it was moving away from supporting the use of flash software on mobile devices - like cell phones and tablet computers. This is not news to Apple iPhone and iPad owners. They're already experiencing the web without flash. But many web site owners who had filled their sites with flash videos, had hoped that Apple would cave, and add flash capabilities to their devices. But that didn't happen. The opposite did. Adobe pulled their support for Flash on mobile devices. And this means those of us who create and place video on the web can no longer rely on flash video as being compatible with the devices our visitors use to view our sites. So now we've got to start converting our flash videos to a new format, one that is compatible with all web browsers as well as all mobile devices. On my own site, I've got almost 400 tutorial videos I'll need to convert from flash. And frankly, I'm not looking forward to the process. But I've found an easy, no-pain way to do this. One that doesn't require learning html5 or creating multiple copies of videos. I've already started the conversion process. And even created a video showing how I'm doing it. You can find that video in the members area of our site at http://www.bmyers.com/members/2136.cfm If you've got flash videos on your web site, now is the time to start the conversion process. It won't be fun, but it has to be done.
