Accidental Video
Bill Myers - March 27, 2010
How sometimes the best video camera in the world, is the one you already have in your pocket - except you may not know it can shoot great video I was recently taking my evening walk on the beach near our home, and as the sun started setting, the sky lit up like it was on fire. It was going to be a spectacular sunset, so I grabbed the small pocket photo camera I carry with me and started shooting photos. But in my haste, I pressed the wrong button on the camera, and it began shooting video instead of photos. I'd never used this photo camera to shoot video before, but since was curious about the video quality, I just let it continue shooting the sunset footage. When I got home, I dumped the video to my computer, added a title, and uploaded it to YouTube. Surprisingly, the video quality from the little pocket camera was actually pretty good. Obviously not as good as you can get with a more expensive camcorder. But not bad at all. You probably already know this, but if you have a pocket photo camera, it likely has a video mode, and can record video and audio, and produce fairly decent quality. Once you learn how to use the video mode, you'll find it real handy when you need to record video, but don't have a video camera available. To see the kind of quality you can get, check out the sunset on the beach video I shot at http://www.bmyers.com/public/1771.cfm It is pretty cool.
