Inconspicuous consumption
Bill Myers - October 11, 2008
Printer-Friendly Format

It wasn't too long ago that most people wanted to appear wealthy.

They wanted to be seen driving expensive cars, wearing pricey Rolex watches, and living in the fanciest neighborhoods.

The idea was to let everyone know (or think) you had money.

But the world has changed.

These days, people who give the appearance of having wealth have become the villains in our society - thanks to the politicians and mass media who blame those who have achieved wealth for all that ails society.

It doesn't matter that most of the wealthy work hard for their money. And it doesn't matter that the wealthy create jobs, finance new businesses, and pay the majority of taxes.

What matters is public perception.

And if public perception now says you are a villain if you appear wealthy, it is NOT a good time to give the appearance of having financial wealth.

Even if you are just getting by, now is not the time to appear wealthy.

Now is the time to drive an older car. To wear less expensive clothes. To avoid flashy jewelry.

This doesn't mean you should stop trying to build your business.

It just means the next few years will be a good time to keep a low profile regarding your successes.
