Taking simple precautions
Bill Myers - September 8, 2007
This is a true story, taken from the news of the past week. She had worked on the book for almost three years, working long hours to get the wording just right. But finally the book was completed and she celebrated when she printed out the final draft and sent it to her publisher. The publisher was so impressed with the manuscript that he leaked word of the forthcoming 'tell all' political book to the press. Two days later, unknown persons broke into the author's home, and stole just one thing - the computer which contained the master files and source material of her just completed book. Was the thief trying to prevent the publishing of the book? Or was it just another random burglary? The police will probably never know - as cases like this rarely get solved. But what about the author, did she have an off site backup of the data files from her computer? She's not saying. If she did have a recent backup, she won't have much problem recovering the lost manuscript. But if she didn't . . . What about you? What would happen if someone broke into your home and stole or destroyed your computers? When was the last time you made a back up of your important files (and photos and business records) on your computer? Maybe this is the weekend to do it.
