New DVD from Bill Myers - Metal Detecting Florida Beaches
bmyers.com | Tip of the Week | Staking out your web real estate Search

Staking out your web real estate
Bill Myers - August 5, 2007
Printer-Friendly Format

In case you missed the news, this past week the domain name 'business.com' was sold for $345 Million dollars.

That's for just the domain name. Nothing more. No web site, no content. Just the domain name.

And yes, I think this is crazy.

For that kind of money you could purchase Chrysler motors, all its manufacturing plants, and all its inventory.

Still, it is a good idea to own domain names related to your business or the products you sell.

And in most cases, you won't have to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to acquire domain names.

For example, I recently registered 20 domain names matching the names of DVD products I am working on - and I paid less than $9 for each domain name. (I used www.godaddy.com )

By registering domain names for my products, it makes it easy for potential customers to find the products and keeps others from encroaching on my product names by registering the domain names for themselves.

Plus, who knows, maybe someone will offer me $345 million for one of those names.

To see an example of how I use these domain names with my products, check out http://www.computertodvd.com
