10 ways to increase your search engine rankings with creative headlines

Printer-Friendly Format

Here's an easy way to quickly increase the number of visitors to your site simply by writing search engine optimized headlines. Includes examples of 10 headlines that will attract more visitors to your site.

One of the quickest and easiest ways to increase the visibility of your web site is to write article headlines that are likely to jump to the top of the search engines.

I've written several articles on this subject (see list below), so in this article I'll just show examples of 10 headlines that can attract traffic to your site, are 'blog worthy' and are likely to increase your google ranking:

Example Headlines

  1. Ten Reasons why a Mac is better than a Windows PC - As recently written about at www.digg.com and http://del.icio.us/, a quick way to get a lot of bloggers to link to your article is to mention in the headline any reasons a Mac computer is better than Windows. By instinct, bloggers will link to the article.

And the more sites that link to the article, the better ranking your site will get in Google.

To bring attention to the article, link to it using www.furl.com, www.digg.com and www.reddit.

  2. 10 'Must Have' Free Programs for the Mac - This headline also appeals to mac users and bloggers (see strategy of headline #1 above.

Alternate Headline: 10 'Must Have' Free Programs for Windows

  3. 10 Easy Ways to Generate Revenue with your web site - There are about 800 million web site owners who want to figure out a way to generate revenue with their web site. This kind of headline (and accompanying article) will get linked to by lots of other sites

  4. 10 Easy Ways to Generate Revenue with your Mac - This headline combines the strategy of headline #1 above and headline #3 above. (Anything with Mac in the headline will get bloggers attention and usually will be linked to at the popular link sites.)

  5. 10 Ways the TV Show 'Lost' is like Gilligan's Island - An example of a headline that piggybacks onto a popular TV show. The more popular the TV show, the greater number of people who will search the web for details about it.

Alternate Headline: 'Six hidden clues you may have missed on LOST'

  6. Six steps to becoming a freelance writer in six weeks - According to popular surveys, most people have a dream of writing for a living. An article that condenses the process down into six easy steps will likely attract attention, and likely be linked to by bloggers (most of who dream of becoming a paid writer).

Alternate Headline: Ten Ways to Use your Digital Camera to Make a Living - Another popular dream - making a living as a photographer.

  7. Ten Reasons why Britney Spears will Dump Kevin - This headline piggybacks on the popularity of Britney Spears and her husband Kevin. Believe it or not, people are interested in this kind of stuff and search the web for any 'dirt' they can dig up.

If your site targets that audience, use the headlines that will get their attention.

To find out what 'celebrities' are hot in the search engines check out http://buzz.yahoo.com/ and http://www.google.com/intl/en/press/zeitgeist.html .

Try to incorporate some of those most searched for 'celebrity' names in your headlines.

  8. Twelve Best Rock Albums you've never heard - Instantly attracts attention and curiosity among rock music lovers. Will likely get linked to by bloggers, and picked up by Digg.com and other popular link sites.

Lists like this will work for almost any genre of movie, book, or movie. Also popular, 'ten worst . . .'.

  9. Ten places you don't want to live if Global Warming continues - This headline incorporates a hot topic (no pun intended) and ties it to paranoia created by that hot topic.

If you are at all worried about global warming and you see the above headline, you are compelled to read the article to see if where you live is included on the list.

  10. Six Signs that World War III has already started - Another example of a headline that ties into current news, and has the ability to get the attention and links of bloggers and others who write and post links for a living.

The 'Top Ten' List . . .

I'm sure you noticed that all the above headline examples featured a 'top ten' or similar list.

The reason is simple.

People are more likely to read something that presents a easy-to-read list. They know that scanning a list will be easy, won't take up much time, and might have some entertainment value.

If you present a list, you'll get a larger audience.

Another benefit of writing 'top ten' lists - they are far easier to write than long articles.
